J.W Anderson brought out a collection that will have the man on the street running for cover. While I can appreciate Anderson is not afraid to mix elements of his women’s collections into his menswear, I feel by doing so he alienates himself from the realities of modern man.
Yes fashion is about pushing boundaries and his fearlessness in doing so seems to know no bounds but it is difficult enough getting men to dress well without inviting derision. Anderson’s show of peplum shorts and high leather boots with frills is the work of a man who would appear to cock-a-snoop at what the man on the street believes to be fashion. Then you see the sublime royal blue and pinstripe overcoats, the wonderful scissors and fence jumpers and the penny drops: Anderson wants to make you think.
Anderson will split opinion, in fact he seems to revel in doing just that, but pass this off as fashion for fashions sake at your peril. Fashion should make you think, it should push boundaries and while I will be the first to admit I won’t be donning thigh clenching peplum shorts anytime soon, I’d certainly wear a bright peach overcoat with a large white collar.
