Fresh after their brand collaboration with Lover’s, Lyle & Scott are proud to announce their upcoming collaboration with revered menswear store Oi Polloi. Taking influence from the laid-back thrift-store stylings of the grunge era, vintage Seditionaries jumpers and the relaxing sport of golf, the knitwear capsule collection consists of 4 stylish mohair cardigans in block and argyle patterns.

Founded in Manchester in 2002, Oi Polloi has established itself as one of the most famous independent menswear stores in the UK. Co-founder, Steve Sanderson explains the story behind their recent partnership with Lyle & Scott. ‘They were one of the first labels we stocked. We wanted to bring together Lyle & Scott’s rich history with our perspective on the cultural history of reappropriation—referencing cardigan-wearing cultural icons through the decades. There was Hockney in the ‘60s… Lydon in the ‘70s… Cobain in the ‘90s.’

The inspiration behind this collection was found when the Oi Polloi team delved through images from the Lyle & Scott archive. ‘We noticed golf sweaters with oversized argyle patterns’, Sanderson recalls. ‘We wanted to make something unexpected, inspired by Lyle & Scott’s rich cultural experiences whilst adding our own cultural references. We’d never seen Lyle & Scott do a mohair cardigan before and their development team helped us turn that idea into the actual product’.

Discussing the lack of the prominent Lyle & Scott logo in this capsule, Sanderson notes this was actually ‘a nod to Lyle & Scott working with and making for Dior in the ‘50s. We wanted the quality of the item to be what you notice, not the branding.’ This quality is visible in the level of detail the capsule contains, with branding etched into the cardigan buttons and soft and luscious Italian mohair coating the pink and olive-coloured designs.

Lyle & Scott X Lovers FC

Lyle & Scott has announced the second drop of its ‘Memories are Made’ collaboration with Lovers FC. Following the success of the first sold-out February collection, the latest instalment between the Scottish heritage brand and English football collective offers a unisex knitwear collection celebrating some of football’s most iconic team shirts.

Describing his partnership with Lyle & Scott, Lovers FC founder Neal Heard explains he was “one of the original 80’s terrace dwellers, the Football Casuals, and we were mad on our Lyle and Scott knitwear; so when I decided to put my idea of turning classic kits into knitwear I thought, why not approach the best? True to their reputation, L&S brought its own exacting standards and attention to details to the collection.”

The second collaboration forays into jumpers and now polo shirts, consisting of 10 pieces re-imagining designs from legendary teams including Ajax, Juventus and The Netherlands. With jumpers blending lambswool with nylon and knitted polos formed from cotton, Neal states the colourful collection gives a “much thinner gauge of knitting, which gives that authentic football shirt feel”.

The partnership taps This Fan Girl founder Amy Drucquer for its campaign, alongside two other members of the female-led football community. Speaking of TFG’s involvement, Amy notes “What really drew us to this collection was the way it’s rewritten the rules of football – who’s created kits in knitwear before? We loved how these classic designs were reformatted to create something playful and rebellious.”

The Capsule Collection

The collection is very 80s focussed and as a football fan myself during these times some of the shirts bring back great memories of the teams and players that used to wear them.

This jumper was inspired by the Netherlands team with Ruud Gullit and Marco Van Basten winning the Euro 88 football championships. As a Dutchman myself this iconic style is ingrained in my memory forever.

The CCCP or Russia team-inspired knitwear is also from Euro 88 where the team lost in the finals from the Netherlands. This was also the last time the CCCP played in a major football tournament.

When I see the Sampdoria polo shirt of the late 80s Gianluca Vialli comes to mind. At Juventus in the 80s it had to be the number 10 shirt wearing, Michel Platini.

Argentinian club River Plate inspired polo shirt. In 1986 this club rose to international fame winning both the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup.

The Lyle & Scott X Lovers FC capsule collection has more shirts that are late 80s inspired, including the Euro 88 German football shirt worn by no other than Jürgen Klinsmann and the Belgium 84 shirt worn by its hero Enzo Scifo. All are great classics that have been brought back as lovely knitwear in polos and jumpers.

I am staying in Hoi An which is a city on Vietnam’s central coast known for its well-preserved Ancient Town, cut through with canals. The former port city’s melting-pot history is reflected in its architecture, a mix of eras and styles from wooden Chinese shophouses and temples to colourful French colonial buildings, ornate Vietnamese tube houses and the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge with its pagoda.

Hoi An is also famous for endless amounts of tailors that can create whatever you like. Saturated with the same same outfits, being bought by tourists. In my observation, I can truly see the demand tourists crave here for very cheap bespoke tailoring. I can see that the international tourists love the experience which is still strong no matter what the quality let alone outcome is when the clothes are fitted.

However that has never ever been me when it comes to the love of clothing. Clothing for me is a lifestyle and an endless passion of communication in an art form. I love searching and learning from fashion designers why they work so hard to create what they do. For this reason, let me introduce you to designer called Aldegonde Van Alsenoy who trained in the city of Antwerp and is now residing in Hoi An Vietnam for many years. Most successful Antwerp designers decide to remain in Antwerp however Aldegonde is an adventurous woman who wanted to be a designer in her own right.

Aldegonde’s passion for fashion is to create one-off pieces. In her boutiques both in Hoi An and Da Nang all of her collections are unique and once bought no two are the same. This is rare to find in a saturated market as fashion. However, it is the core essence and the key to her success.

To be able to create designs, from start to beginning, using local produces and sellers of fabrics. I love that I am in control as the designer and it’s the core essence in creating clothing that customers from around the globe continue to return. I am very committed in preserving the art of what is left here in Vietnam regarding skilled craftsmanship. Supporting the local community in regards to weaving techniques. Avana Concept Store Da Nang

So committed to local craftsmanship, Aldegonde decided to team with artist Nguyen Quoc Dan. Together they began a journey and spent painstaking months scouting, collecting empty looms and recycled wood from Vietnam to create a unique and well thought out concept store in an up and coming area of Da Nang. In fact, it’s such a rare store that has not seen anything like this anywhere else in Vietnam. It is more like an art museum than a boutique. The attention to detail using recycled goods from around the country is why the Avana Concept Store is so unique.

Life and business always comes with risks. Showcasing my one off pieces in an inspiring room of art is all about the buying experience. Who am I to dictate what a man or a women should wear. My collections offer the freedom for the buyer to buy into what I call a gender neutral era world of fashion. Tribe Collection

It is one of the most interesting creative stores I have seen here in South East Asia, right here in Da Nang, Vietnam. If I had to describe Aldegonde Van Alsenoy in an interior art form this is it. The shopping experience here is just fabulous, edgy and chic. A collision of fashion and art, the AVANA Da Nang store is the result of a rich collaboration between the Belgian designer and renowned Vietnamese artist Dan Quoc Nguyen. Drawing inspiration from the Co Tu tribes of the Central Highlands, Ava and Dan have created a masterpiece of fashion, wood, art and craft.

I loved the rhythmic tribal carvings that formed the perfect backdrop for Aldegonde’s singular pieces, crafted from the finest handmade fabrics and brocades to create unique and sustainable fashion. This is quite different than something like Joann fabrics. The clothes are also hung on beautifully wooden carved coat hangers which is how meticulous Aldegonde is when it comes to her Avana boutique.

The whole exploration as a customer is relaxed and the store allows me to search at my own leisure. The more I delve into the world of Avana, the more I realise that these one-off pieces, stand alone in this world of saturated fashion.

Palomo Spain is working to make menswear a fairy tale come true, quite literally. Designer Alejandro Gomez Palomo. The twenty-four-year-old designer established the label just under ten months ago by debuting his first collection, entitled ´Orlando´ featuring an array of clothing based on Virginia Woolf´s adaptations of Shakespearean gender-fluid characters. The collection as a whole is rich and varied – there are Poet shirts presented in robin’s egg blue and tracksuits in jewel tones complete with peplums and bishop sleeves which would satisfy even the most demanding of any Elizabethan sports fanatics. In addition to this, Palomo also has something to satisfy the dramatic disco diva with his covetable retro-inspired tear away denim flares. “I feel that boys need to discover different ways to wear clothes that we haven’t been able to wear up until now,”

His past season’s offerings saw him re-direct his normally ethereal, frill-forward fashion into more a more classically Elizabethan aesthetic: Ruffles cascaded out at the arm in a flowing form and blouses were sharply cropped with dipping, exposed shoulder panels. Palomo also gave the classic pinstripe suit a magical makeover, complete with a dipping décolletage which was heavily embroidered with flowers.

“I project what I desire and then I bring it to my own universe, like ‘let’s take it to a different level and fantasize a bit more in the way they dress,’ ” Palomo quoted. He gets inspiration from using mostly vintage materials, which are sourced from a small factory in Southern Spain´s Cordoba. “I work with materials that are usually used for womenswear. In the past, I have worked with a traditional haute couture fabric house that my seamstress has been using her entire career. She does the dressmaking for older and wealthy women. That is the most feminine aspect of my sewing.”

For Men Only

Even though his collections are aimed at the male market, Alejandro still receives many orders from buyers who are purchasing the pieces for female clients. (Show me a girl who wouldn’t want to try on a pair of those Pepto pink velvet flares or that fuchsia sequined jumpsuit.). Even though he perpetuates that his clothes are made for men, and designed with men’s bodies and proportions in mind, Palomo doesn´t seem to be phased by this; “It is erotic to be buying men’s clothes that are actually something really feminine. I think there is an attachment of mystery and excitement for women to buy men’s clothes.”  The label was recently invited by the CFDA to show at New York Men’s Fashion Week which will take place on the first week in February and will mark the start of Palomo´s international fashion journey.

2016 Fall Winter Collection

Haspel announced very recently the release of its SS 16 Collection, and today I’m going to announce my top individual picks in each category of clothing.

Essentials

For the up and coming warm days, shorts are always a must. I picked Hasbro’s ‘Short Walk’ shorts in Midnight Blue because there are very few outfits these shorts will work with. These could easily be your go-to shorts for the whole winter. Let’s be honest, these will never go out of fashion either so who knows? Maybe you’ll be wearing them next summer too!

Shirts

As I perused the shirts section, a few shirts popped out to me but none more than this one. This shirt is called Rampart with a Bikini Girl pattern and I love it because it’s not busy. Something I personally avoid is a loud piece and this suits me just fine having small details. The off white, again, will never go out of style and would actually go perfectly with the shorts I mentioned first.

Suit Separates

In this section I selected two pieces that would make up a suit on a late spring/early summer’s day. The jacket and trousers are matching pieces with a light blue and white lined pattern running top to bottom. Made from Italian Cotton, these pieces are light in both color and weight resulting in a look that I can imaging working perfectly with a Vintage Italian Hat.

Ties

For a classic tie style, the Grey Glen Plaid Tie stood out to me as being one that both stands out and keeps to itself. The fine lines of the pattern and the soft quality feel of cotton makes this tie my favourite among all their ties.

Tuxedos

Hasbro’s new Krewe Tuxedo will wow any group of people you find yourself surrounded by in your bust formal events schedule in 2016. With the detailing down the outside of each leg matching the lower collar of the jacket, you may as well call yourself Bond, James Bond from here on out!

Watches

I’m a big fan of watches and to be frank, I was surprised to find a watch I would genuinely wear by Hasbro. The Brooklyn Watch Collaboration with Hasbro made the top of the list with a beautiful brown strap and blue accents in the face itself, this watch would go with everything I have mentioned here today apart form the Tuxedo.
